Eight West African NGOs publish their environmental roadmaps through the Accelerator’s collective cycles

Acting as strategic compasses, these roadmaps will define the direction the local organisations wish to take, and the means they will mobilise to strengthen their climate resilience while reducing their ecological footprint

In November 2024, the Climate Action Accelerator, in partnership with the Suba collective and PFONGUE, officially launched a new collective cycle with eight NGOs in West Africa: Village Pilote, ONG AGORA, CASADES, DEMTOU HUMANITAIRE, ALPHADEV, ONG CONCEPT, YMCA Senegal and Solthis Senegal.

These organisations operate in several West African countries and work alongside local communities in a wide range of areas: literacy, reintegration of children in difficulty, empowerment and protection of women, the energy-environment nexus, post-crisis humanitarian aid, and community health. Despite the diversity of their fields of intervention, they share a common commitment to a sustainable development that is resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Over the course of a year, the collective cycle unfolded around a progressive and iterative process, articulating several closely linked stages:

  • A state of affairs of each NGO’s climate action

  • Measuring the carbon footprint over a representative year of operation

  • Measuring the waste footprint over a typical month of activity

  • Jointly developing a climate roadmap tailored to the priorities, resources, and specific context of each organisation

  • Thematic events and discussions on climate issues in West Africa

The work on carbon and waste footprints was never an end in itself, but rather a tool for understanding how each NGO actually operates. It helped clarify the main sources of emissions and waste, identify concrete opportunities for improvement, and inform a broader strategic reflection.

On this basis, each NGO then chose the priority themes to be addressed in its climate roadmap, as well as the most realistic and appropriate solutions, drawing on both the Climate Action Accelerator’s solutions catalog and its own experience and interests. This process led to concrete, operational roadmaps aligned with each organisation’s ambitions and capacities

Publishing the climate roadmaps of these eight NGOs marks the culmination of this collective journey. Acting as strategic compasses, they define the direction the organisations wish to take, and the means they will mobilise to strengthen their climate resilience while reducing their ecological footprint.
