About Breaking the Silence (BTS)

Established in 1994, Breaking the Silence (BTS) began its journey as a pioneering non-profit national organisation in Bangladesh, dedicated to child rights and addressing the sensitive issue of child sexual abuse. Formed by a compassionate group of development activists, the organisation initially stepped forward voluntarily to shatter the societal taboos surrounding child exploitation. Over the years, BTS formalized its operations by securing official registrations with the Department of Social Services and the NGO Affairs Bureau, cementing its position as a specialised authority in child protection, community-based models, and advocacy.

Since its early foundations, BTS has significantly broadened its thematic scope to respond to emerging national challenges, structuring its interventions across five core sectors: Child Rights, Protection, and Governance; Youth Development; Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equity; Climate Change and Humanitarian Response; and Health and WASH. Today, the organisation actively promotes institutional capacity building, psychosocial support, and community resilience throughout Bangladesh. By empowering women and youth as core change agents, BTS successfully translates grassroots insights into national policy reforms, creating safer, more equitable environments for vulnerable populations.
