Measuring emissions in the humanitarian sector: what’s new for the Humanitarian Carbon Calculator? 

The Humanitarian Carbon Calculator (HCC), developed under the leadership of the International Committee of the Red Cross and with input from over 100 humanitarian organisations and experts, is a tool designed to help measure and manage carbon emissions in the humanitarian sector. As of December 2025, technical maintenance and support of the HCC was handed over to the Climate Action Accelerator, with the support of the Crisis and Support Centre of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (CDCS). This transition ensures the tool’s long-term continuity, broader reach, enhanced community support, and the development of new functionalities, allowing the humanitarian sector to continue advancing its decarbonisation efforts. 

This webinar was designed to give existing and potential users of the HCC a clear overview of the tool’s planned evolutions and which enhanced technical support the Accelerator is bringing. A short overview of the history of the HCC tool was followed by an explanation of the changes and improvements users can expect with the Accelerator’s involvement in 2026. The session also covered updates on sectoral activities and presented the project plan outlook for the coming year, before opening the floor for questions, suggestions and concluding with key takeaways and next steps. Participants left with a better understanding of how the HCC tool is evolving and what these changes mean for their work.

• Sonja Schmid, Solutions & Analytics Lead, Climate Action Accelerator. Sonja Schmid is leading the Climate Action Accelerator’s Solutions & Analytics team and is one of the thematic focal points for procurement and supply. She has over ten years of experience in the field of sustainability, specialising in purchasing and procurement standards. She was previously Corporate Responsibility Manager at a major retailer in France and Senior Manager of the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative at a private sector association. Prior to that, she worked for a leading consultancy on climate, environment, and development based in Germany. Sonja holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Political Science from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and speaks German, English, and French.

• Juan Galvez, Climate Analytics Expert, Independent Consultant. After few years with a major corporate consultancy firm in Spain, Juan joined the IFRC nearly 20 years ago. He gained wide experience at the Geneva Secretariat, in four regional offices, the logistics hub in Dubai, and other field missions – mainly in supply chain and logistics – ranging from emergency response, capacity assessment, and training. He led the introduction of a carbon accounting system at the organisation a played an important role in the development, testing and use of the HCC. 

• Quentin Roques, Junior Climate Analytics Officer, Climate Action Accelerator. Quentin is a digital engineer specialising in data and artificial intelligence. He joined the Accelerator’s Solutions and Analytics team to help our partners quantify their footprint, calculate their trajectory and choose their targets to achieve their goals. Quentin holds a master’s degree in data science from Telecom Paris and a master’s degree in innovation and digital design from SciencePo Paris. In his previous professional experience, he specialised in estimating Scope 3 emissions, working in the industrial sector for EDF. 

• Pauline Dupuy (moderator), Junior Climate Analytics Officer, Climate Action Accelerator. Pauline is a carbon data specialist in the Accelerator’s Solutions and Analytics team, where she works on carbon footprint assessments as well as carbon and financial modelling. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations, specialising in New Challenges and Crisis Management at Sciences Po Toulouse (IEP Toulouse), alongside a long-standing dual degree in Embedded Systems Engineering at INSA Toulouse. She then gained experience in international cooperation with the International Cooperation Department of Caritas Luxembourg.
